New Course Offering: Careers in Education

Have you ever wondered what it’s really like to stand at the front of the classroom?

Starting this year, Mount Si High School juniors and seniors can find out through a brand new, yearlong course: Careers in Education.

This one credit course is built for students who are curious about becoming teachers, counselors, administrators, coaches, or working in any role that supports schools and students. It fulfills an Occupational Education or elective graduation requirement and includes minimal homework, with a strong emphasis on hands on learning and real world experience.

What Students Will Explore

During the first semester, students will build a foundation in the profession by:

  • Exploring the history of education and how it shapes today’s schools

  • Examining current societal and community issues impacting education
  • Studying the foundations of teaching and learning
  • Observing preschool, elementary, and middle school classrooms
  • Hearing from guest speakers representing a variety of education careers

Then in second semester, the experience becomes even more hands on.

Step Into the Classroom

Students will participate in a practicum or internship at a cooperating preschool, elementary, or middle school. During this placement, students will:

  • Work one on one or with small groups of students
  • Support classroom instruction
  • Design lessons and practice classroom management strategies
  • Develop leadership and mentorship skills

Students will also have the opportunity to test for certification as an Education Support Professional, commonly known as a paraeducator, before they graduate from high school. That means they can leave Mount Si with both real classroom experience and a recognized credential in hand.

Why This Course Matters

For students considering a future in education, this course provides a meaningful head start. It offers insight into the profession, practical skills, and authentic classroom experience that go far beyond what a traditional classroom setting can provide.

Enrollment is already underway. Students interested in registering should connect with their school counselor or review the course catalog for more details.

If you are thinking about a career in education, this is your opportunity to step into the profession and see if it is the right fit.
